The stretch between Independence Day and mid-August is usually the quiet season in a Florida suburb. In Lakewood Ranch this year it's the opposite. A two-week restaurant showcase, a fast-food arrival with lease-drama backstory, and a Sunday market that has become the anchor of local weekends have turned July and early August into the busiest food window on the calendar.
If you already live here, this is your short brief on what's worth walking out the door for between now and the first day of school.
The two weeks that define the summer
From July 18 through August 1, participating restaurants across Main Street and Waterside Place run A Taste of the Ranch, offering exclusive prix-fixe menus with wine pairings, specialty cocktails, and one-of-a-kind dishes. It's the kind of event a food scene only sustains once density hits a threshold. Five years ago Lakewood Ranch didn't have the roster to make a two-week prix-fixe run interesting. It does now.
Osteria 500, Korê Steakhouse, Forked at Waterside, and Good Liquid Brewing anchor the Waterside Place side. On the Main Street side, 131 Main, Casa Maya, and a growing bench of newer arrivals fill out the participation.
The takeaway isn't that Lakewood Ranch has restaurants. It's that Lakewood Ranch has enough restaurants, close enough together, that you can plan a two-week food itinerary without leaving the community.
What's actually opened since last summer
Two openings matter this year, for very different reasons.
Kuro Sushi. A new restaurant serving sushi, skewers and small plates — sharing the same owner as three other popular Sarasota area Asian eateries — debuted on Lakewood Ranch's Main Street. Kuro Sushi opened to the public in November following a reservation-only soft opening, at 8126 Lakewood Main St. #102 in the former space of Hana Sushi Lounge. Owner Daniel Dokko already runs JPAN Sushi & Grill in Sarasota's Shops at Siesta Row and University Town Center and Korean barbecue spot Korê Steakhouse in Lakewood Ranch's Waterside Place, all under Umami Hospitality Group. The room seats about 120 across indoor and outdoor tables plus a 12-seat bar, and a seven-seat sushi bar offers omakase, Japanese for "I'll leave it up to you". Reservations for the omakase counter are the hard get.
Saucy! by KFC. The Lena Road arrival is a smaller story with a stranger footnote. The fast-food spinoff built around chicken tenders, sauces and build-your-own flavor combinations opened May 4 at 5484 Lena Road, taking over a space once occupied by PDQ, the Tampa-born chicken chain that also built its reputation around tenders. The backstory: Yum Brands, its parent company, acquired 13 former PDQ leases in Florida in 2025, with sites on the Gulf Coast, in North Florida and in Central Florida intended for future development. So the Lena Road building didn't change categories, it changed corporate parents. If you watched PDQ close and wondered what was going in, that's the answer.
Beyond those two, upcoming openings have included Deep Lagoon Seafood & Oyster House, Mexican restaurant and tequila bar Agave Bandido, and sushi bar and Japanese kitchen Dear Fish, filling out the Waterside Place mix that already includes Osteria 500, Good Liquid Brewing Co., Korê Steakhouse and Forked at Waterside. Deep Lagoon has since come online as the most recent addition to Waterside Place, a lakeside destination that showcases a range of international dining experiences, with inside and outside dining and bars and lake views.
The weekly rhythm, in one glance

Two things worth flagging on that grid.
First, the Sunday market. The Sunday farmers' market at Waterside Place at Lakewood Ranch operates with 100+ local vendors including organic produce, flowers, and specialty spices. The 100-vendor number is the tell. Most suburban farmers' markets top out at 30 or 40. At three digits, it's not a market you drop into. It's a market you plan a Sunday around.
Second, Ranch Nite Wednesdays runs on a calendar most residents don't check. The weeknight hangout at Waterside Place runs 6–9 p.m. every Wednesday, from October 1, 2025 through May 27, 2026, with live music, local food trucks and sweets. That means for the current July stretch, Wednesdays are dark until the fall restart. Plan around it.
The Fourth-of-July anchor, and what it signals
The Star-Spangled Spectacular at Waterside Place is the marquee July event, and it's worth noting how the geography has shifted. A decade ago, the fireworks conversation in this part of Manatee and Sarasota counties pointed west toward the bay. Now a meaningful share of local families stay east, at Waterside, because the town center has grown into a real gathering space with parking, food, and sightlines.
That geographic shift is the quiet through-line under all of this. The restaurants, the market, the concert series, the fireworks — none of it individually is news. Together, they're the reason a Waterside Place resident can go a full weekend without driving to University Town Center, Sarasota, or the beaches. That's new, and it's the sort of thing you only notice if you live here.
A few practical notes for the current stretch
- Kuro Sushi omakase seats. With only seven counter seats, call 941-422-5876 or book through kurosushi.bar well in advance for any weekend within Taste of the Ranch.
- Parking at Waterside on Sundays. The 100-vendor market fills the closer lots by 10 a.m. The trolley and outer lots are your friend after that.
- Music on Main on Friday nights. The 6 p.m. start is a soft opening. The crowd density and the good food-truck lines land closer to 7:30.
- Wednesday nights in July. Ranch Nite Wednesdays is on its off-season break. Osteria 500's bar, Good Liquid's taproom, and Allswell's brunch-and-late menu are the fill-ins.
The one thing to take away
Lakewood Ranch used to be described as a master-planned community with restaurants attached. As of this summer, the sentence flips. It's a functioning small downtown with a food scene dense enough to host a two-week prix-fixe event, a weekly market that draws vendors from across the state, and a Wednesday-through-Sunday rhythm that most residents build their calendar around. If you moved here five years ago and haven't looked up in a while, look up.
